5 Reasons why you should take up Yoga

Yoga is a mind-body exercise practice that combines breath control, meditation and movements to stretch and strengthen muscles.

1. It reduces inflammation in your body

Chronic inflammation can lead to the development of many diseases as well as causing visible signs of aging. Research Scientists have found that 12 weeks of yoga slowed cellular aging. They also found indications of lower levels of inflammation and significantly decreased levels of cortisol.

2. It relieves aches and pains

Improving flexibility overall is the best way you can relieve those aches and pains. As we age the chances of joint pain increases. A weak bone structure, lack of adequate physical exercise and lack of essential nutrients in our diet can all contribute to this situation. A daily routine of yoga can help to warm up muscles and joints in the body  and release tension. Practicing yoga can help increase the mobility and function of your joints and also help to strengthen them.

3. It reduces stress

Yoga gives you an opportunity to take time out , pay attention to your body and breathing and start the new day with an inner calm and rejuvenation. It’s a holistic discipline that you can bring into your morning routine with far-reaching health benefits. Meditation is also part of yoga and we all know the benefits of this mindful practice and the importance of being ‘grounded’ and in the ‘now’. Yoga is not about self-improvement. It’s about self-acceptance – Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa.

4. Increases self-awareness

Yoga has a mind-body connection when performing the asanas (the postures). The practice also calls for us to pay close attention to the process of  breathing (pranayama). Prana means ‘life force energy’ and ayama means ‘to control or extend’. Yoga is also about mindfulness and self-acceptance. It can lift your energy levels and help your confidence. The postures can also help you familiarise yourself with parts of your body that you may have neglected.

5. Improves body posture, flexibility, balance and strength

If you have good posture and a healthy strong back you will be generally happier, more confident and have more energy. As we age we can be more prone to fractures and are more likely to lose balance. Yoga can help prevent falls, a common problem in older adults. A chronic hunched posture restricts breathing and can cause shortness of breath. Improving alignment, flexibility and strength will benefit your entire body.
