5 Benefits of Reading As We Mature

Are you reading a book at the moment? You may find it interesting to know that there are numerous benefits to reading regularly. This enjoyable practice is even more important as we age, and here is why:

  1. Reduces Stress

Think how relaxing it was when you read your last book. Losing yourself in a book is a great form of escapism. It can take you away from all your other everyday thoughts as you focus on what you are reading, and simply be in the moment.

  2. Improves Writing Skills and Provides Knowledge

It provides an opportunity to emulate a good writing style, the more you read. It can also be a vehicle for obtaining a good general knowledge.

  3. Improves Focus and Concentration

When you are reading all your focus is on the text in the book. In today’s world we are often multi-tasking and reading is a great way to do just ‘one thing’. It really helps to develop your concentration.

  4. Boosts Sleep

How often have you found yourself falling asleep with a book in your hand? When your concentration starts to wane, the benefit is that you’ll start to feel sleepy. As it’s also relaxing, you’ll find you will obtain a deeper sleep as well.

  5. Improves Memory and Mental Health

Just like any other muscle in your body, your brain requires exercise to keep it healthy as we age. Research has found that people who keep their brains active by reading or playing mentally challenging games are 2.5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, than those who spend their time doing less stimulating activities. In addition, some areas of mental ability actually increase with age. For instance, in the absence of disease, a mature brain enjoys a larger vocabulary and sharpened language skills.

So, once again; What are you reading at the moment? One of the books I’m currently reading is ” Mindfulness, 25 Ways to Live in the Moment Through Art ” by Christopher Andre.
